2011 in Review: Amusement park lot’s flea market nixed

Bainbridge — A parking lot at the former Geauga Lake amusement park remained virtually empty during the summer after the Bainbridge Township Board of Zoning Appeals shot down a proposal for a seasonal flea market.

We just think this is unmanageable from our standpoint, board chairman Michael Lamanna said.

The market, proposed by three area residents, wouldve been open weekends from April to October in the former parks main parking lot on Route 43, and would have featured arts and crafts vendors.

The organizers hoped to attract 200 to 400 vendors and 10 to 15 food and beverage sellers.

The market was expected to attract 1,000 people each day, said Aurora resident and project co-founder Mike DiDomenico.

Lamanna noted reasons for rejecting the variance were seasonal outdoor sales of merchandise are not permitted in the commercial/recreation zoning district and it would be difficult for the township to control the activities.

Other board members said they believed the township wouldnt benefit from property or payroll taxes, and the patrons of the market would only have a minimal effect on neighboring businesses.
