Otway couple celebrates 71 happy years married
Many a sonnet, song and nowadays, text, email and Twitter account have shared the trials and tribulations of the first flutters of the heart, the first moment when eyes locked across the room.
Equally, they are a platform for the endings of love affairs. How divine, then, to hear when love stands the test of time, traversing through the many challenges and rising to meet the twilight years together.
Such is the ultimate love affair of Dot and Alex Sykes, residents at Otway Health and Community Services. Married for 71 years and together for 75, neither a two year absence during Alex’s four year posting in New Guinea during the war, his subsequent hearing loss and forty years of blindness or the devastating loss of a stillborn child have dampened their spirits and love for each other.
Dot recalled one of the best days of her life was when she reconnected with Alex for the first time postwar, at a lake in East Ringwood.
“I was pushing Colin, our seven month old baby that Alex had not seen given he was away at war,” she said.
“Seeing Alex when he first laid eyes on Colin was one of the happiest days of our life. He nursed him all night long.
Dot’s sage advice on staying happily married for so long: “Accept a person as they are. You can never change another.
Love them and tell them you love them every day even if they can’t hear you. Nothing else matters, for as long as there is love there is hope. It will see you through.

Days Gone By: Idora Park was Oakland’s fun-filled predecessor to the Temescal
FM Borax Smith made his fortune in carving minerals, mainly borax, out of the Nevada desert. He then invested in trolley lines and real estate. In 1903, these two investments came together in one of the biggest and best amusement parks this side of the Rockies — at least thats what promoters said.
Smith and his Realty Syndicate needed an attraction to get people on their streetcars to Oakland. For the next 26 years, Idora Park filled the bill, bringing thousands of visitors to the walled-in park that covered about 20 acres from 56th to 58th streets between Shattuck and Telegraph avenues.
It was in April 1903 that Idora Park became home to Oakland baseball fans; by September of that year, it had become what the Oakland Tribune called an important factor in the amusement world on this side of the Bay. Vaudeville acts were appearing on stage, and moving pictures were shown every afternoon except Monday.
On April 14, 1903, the Tribune announced, Mr. Bigney, the famous diver, will dive 120 feet into a five-foot tank. In 1906, the park got its first roller coaster. There would be four others by the time it closed in 1929. Jack London brought his two little girls to Idora Park to ride the roller coasters.
The Oakland Tribune would hold annual Tribune Days at the park. In 1911, those attending Tribune Day could take a ride on Shoot the Rapids, watch an auto race, see a movie or try the roller skating rink, where it is

Blue Ken to enjoy voyage of lifetime
All aboard! A Preston councillor is gearing up to set sail on his narrow boat to join 1,000 vessels for the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Coun Ken Hudson and wife Sue are taking part in The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on their 57ft boat, the Marie Celeste, at high water on Sunday, June 3.
Tall ships, working boats, pleasure vessels, fishing boats and passenger boats carrying up to 30,000 flag-waving well-wishers will be among the vessels taking part in one of the largest ever flotillas assembled on the River Thames.
Tory Coun Hudson, who lives in Inglewhite near Preston, said: “Something like 3,000 people put their name forward to be in it so we were lucky to be selected. It’s all happening on the water, on the Thames.
“We will put Lancashire flags on the boat, as well as Union Jacks. We’re very chuffed.”
Coun Hudson helped secure the £6m Millennium Link project which saw the Lancaster Canal linked with the rest of the national inland water network in 2002, meaning his voyage can take him all the way from Garstang Marina to the capital.
After Easter, he will sail to Lichfield, Staffordshire, where his daughter has a boat and will leave the Marie Celeste moored there until the second leg of the journey, after council elections in May.
He will also be joined by two of his grandchildren, his daughter and her husband for the event.
Lord Salisbury, chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, said: “Our aspirations for this wonderful tribute to the Queen are coming together very well. This is a hugely ambitious project and it is gathering momentum day by day.”

Musical voyage of Lata Mangeshkar to release soon
PUNE: Yatindra Mishra, who is known for his books on Ustad Bismillah Khan Sur Ki Baradari and a compilation of Gulzar’s poems Yaar Julahe, is now working on the musical journey of the nightingale of India – Lata Mangeshkar. Mishra addressed this at the Baajaa Gaajaa: Music Conclave 2012 held on 11-12 February,2012 in Pune.
The book, chronicling the seven-decades of her musical voyage in the form of conversations, by author Mishra is slated to be released in the next two years.
The book to be published in English and Hindi is a “conversational biography” about the life and times of the living legend. It mirrors the legend’s musical voyage from the making of her first movie ‘Mahal’ in 1949 with the song ‘Aayega Aanewala’ to the era in which she sang, the people she has worked with etc.
Speaking about his association with the singing legend, Mishra said, “I feel privileged and fortunate to write about her. I am blessed that she is giving me good amount of time and telling me about her musical life with so much of enthusiasm.”
“The book describes Lata didi’s childhood and her musical career from the past era till date. It includes the anecdotes, trivia and behind the scenes, the people she has worked with like musicians and lyricist, and also captures various topics and subjects of her life in detail,” he noted.
Mishra has three collections of poetry to his name – ‘Yada Kada’, ‘Ayodhya Tatha Anya Kavitayein’ and ‘Dyodhi Par Alaap’ – besides which he has written a book on classical singer Girija Devi (Girija) and a book of conversations with dancer Sonal Mansingh (Devpriya).
