Filled Under: Love Affairs

Otway couple celebrates 71 happy years married

Many a sonnet, song and nowadays, text, email and Twitter account have shared the trials and tribulations of the first flutters of the heart, the first moment when eyes locked across the room.

Equally, they are a platform for the endings of love affairs. How divine, then, to hear when love stands the test of time, traversing through the many challenges and rising to meet the twilight years together.

Such is the ultimate love affair of Dot and Alex Sykes, residents at Otway Health and Community Services. Married for 71 years and together for 75, neither a two year absence during Alex’s four year posting in New Guinea during the war, his subsequent hearing loss and forty years of blindness or the devastating loss of a stillborn child have dampened their spirits and love for each other.

Dot recalled one of the best days of her life was when she reconnected with Alex for the first time postwar, at a lake in East Ringwood.

“I was pushing Colin, our seven month old baby that Alex had not seen given he was away at war,” she said.

“Seeing Alex when he first laid eyes on Colin was one of the happiest days of our life. He nursed him all night long.

Dot’s sage advice on staying happily married for so long: “Accept a person as they are. You can never change another.

Love them and tell them you love them every day even if they can’t hear you. Nothing else matters, for as long as there is love there is hope. It will see you through.

Valentine’s Day – an occasion to declare love

Valentine?s Day ? an occasion to declare love

By Arsalan Haider

LAHORE: Some say that Valentine?s Day is a thoughtless tradition as love should not be associated with a date on the calendar, but then again a lot of people get to express their feelings on this day.
People of all age groups find it easy to convey their feelings to loved ones on this day when everyone around them is celebrating the event, sending heart-shaped cards, balloons, mugs, chocolates, stuff toys to each other.
Though the day might not be as enjoyable for singles as it is for couples, yet, people all around the world associate the day with promotion of love and peace.
Lahoris too are set to celebrate Valentine?s Day in full spirit, as people were seen buying cards, accessories, chocolates and other items on the eve of Valentine?s Day. Mobile networks remained busy as millions of text messages were exchanged at 12?o clock on Tuesday night.
Valentine?s Day is observed on February 14; traditionally a day on which people express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards.
The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. It was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD, and was later deleted from the General Roman Calendar of Saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. Modern Valentine?s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.
After the event?s resurgence in Pakistan through its open celebration in Musharraf?s era, Valentine?s Day was quickly welcomed and accepted by the youth, students, and even elders. The celebration received a lot of criticism in the early days, however, with the passage of time, the concept was accepted by society to a large extent. Interestingly, a change in the manner of celebrations has been witnessed through the years. A lot of young people are seen using the occasion for their own convenience. Taking advantage of the pleasant atmosphere and environment on Valentine?s Day, a lot of youngsters reveal their love affairs and choices for marriages to their parents.
?I decided to take advantage of the day and tell my mother about my loved one,? said a university student, adding that there could be no other day perfect for revealing this information to one?s parents.

Halle Berry Is Singing the Baby Daddy Blues a Tune Too Late

The relationship between two of Tinseltowns beautiful people has skidded into that special place in hell where bitter old love affairs go: scathing post-breakup hatred. In their latest installment of off-screen drama, Gabriel Aubrey has been investigated for child endangerment after he allegedly pushed the nanny while she was holding his daughter, and Halle Berrys petitioning to move to France, which will make her joint custody arrangement conveniently inconvenient for her ex. Checkmate.

I, for one, think Halle needs to take a breather from romance. Just to get her head together. She hasnt even gotten her old house in order and made respectable arrangements with ol Gabe and shes off and running with a new dude, supposedly engaged to Olivier Martinez. (Which is also interesting since she swore up and down on several occasions that shed never get married again. Eh, who can figure it out?)

But I do know this: if shes using the court system to wield revenge against her former flame, or if shes purposely trying to make it difficult for him to see the child they have together, shes making a huge mistake. Huge.

The hardest part of the single mother lifestyle, aside from the actual raising of the children, is dealing with the ol used-to-be boyfriend. The ex-husband. The former lover. The unlucky jump-off whatever the man who helped create the child was once upon a time. And most of us, despite all the unflattering stereotypes that go along with being a dreaded baby mama (a term I detest), still try to maintain some semblance of cordiality with our kids fathers for the sake of the babies.

But more and more, Im hearing dads with downright blood-curdling horror stories about how they arent allowed to see their son or their daughter because their childs mother is running interference in the relationship. When you tell a man who wants to see his child that he cant see his child, you are taking away part of what makes him a man in the first place the joy and responsibility of parenthood.

As a woman who has pleaded, reasoned, and argued with a dude who refused and still refuses to be regularly involved in the goings-on of his kids life, Im just as offended by that foolishness as guys are. Here are men willing and wanting to play their parts as fathers and the women on the other end of the equations are blocking them at every pass because theyre bitter about the breakup that led to them being demoted from wife or girlfriend to my son or daughters mother. Or theyre mad because the dudes dont pay enough child support or pay it regularly or maybe dont pay it at all. Or Dad has a new lady friend and Mom insists she doesnt want her baby around any strangers (even though Mom dates regularly and has been caught with a random mister or uncle her own self).

Even though all of the above justifies an attitude, maybe even a cold shoulder and some wariness, it could never justify barring a kid from seeing their daddy. Ultimately, thats not hurting just the intended target: the man. Its hurting the child, too. Weve heard that from experts on Oprah to Dr. Phil himself. But every day, some crazed woman gives her ex a hard way to go come time to see his children when, in actuality, she ought to be glad the man is making any effort at all. I mean, they aint just building active fathers in assembly-line fashion. So when you come across a man who wants to be an engaged, involved, conscientious participant in his kids lives, no matter what the other logistics of the situation are, let him do his job.

Unless a woman suspects that her child is in real danger because her exs lifestyle poses a threat to her babys safety or hes abusive or has a drug or alcohol habit, shes out of pocket for keeping them apart. Part of the code of ethics that goes along with being a mother is being unselfish. Thats not just to our children, though theyre the focus of our drive to be better women, better mothers, just better people all around. We also have an obligation to show compassion to the men who helped create the kids. It aint easy oh I know it aint easy but its necessary to raise children who feel loved, whole and confident in their them-ness.

Is a mother ever justified in keeping her kids from their father?

An Imperfect Life: On George and WB Yeats

You have had no love affairs of consequence. When Yeats, a 51-year-old bachelor, once again proposes to Maud Gonne (the Irish actress and political activist with whom hed fallen in love as a young man), she declines. When Yeats then proposes to Mauds daughter, Iseult, she also declines; Iseult would later have an affair with Pound. A month later, when Yeats proposes to you, you accept. At 11:20 in the morning on October 20, 1917, you are married in the Harrow Road Registry Office; the witnesses are Pound and your mother.

I think [this] girl both friendly, serviceable amp; very able, writes Yeats to an old friend. She is under the glamour of a great man 30 years older than herself amp; with a talent for love-making, reports your mother. Honeymooning in the Ashdown Forest Hotel in Sussex, you cast a horary (an astrological chart designed to answer a particular question at a particular place and time). Per dimandera [domandare] perche noi siamo infelice, you write in a language you know your husband does not understandto ask why we are unhappy. The discombobulated Yeats is writing letters to Iseult; he is writing poems: O but her heart would break to learn my thoughts are far away. A decade later, now the mother of two young children, the wife of a Nobel Prizewinning poet, you write burn this when read at the top of a letter to a close friend: had I known that all this might happen I should certainly never have had a family!

This is one way of describing the life of Bertha Georgie Hyde Lees Yeats, the fascinating woman who devoted her entire adult life to the needs and, after his death, reputation of an indisputably great poet, a poet with whose poems (qua poems) we are only beginning to come to terms, despite the poets prominent place in the canon. The intellect of man is forced to choose/Perfection of the life, or of the work, wrote Yeats in The Choice, and it would seem that, for him, the choice was clear. He could be an arch, distant father (Who is it you are looking for? he once asked his daughter when meeting her at the family gate), a husband expert at affecting incompetence at simple everyday tasks so that his purchase on greatness might be presumed. Once, when worried about his eyesight, George sent him a new lamp. What oil do I put in it? he asked. The lamp of course consumes lamp oil, she wrote back. You could surely not have imagined that it demanded Sanctuary oil, or olive oil? Easily, as George knew well, her husband could have imagined that it demanded Sanctuary oil. When asked how it felt to live with a genius, George replied, Oh alright, I never notice. Her devotion did not wobble, but she was no ones fool.

* * *

There is something wrong, something too ingeniously self-forgiving, about Yeatss distinction between perfection of the life and perfection of the work. Yeats was a formidable guy; he lived in a medieval tower, he talked with dead people, he wrote some of the most beautiful lyric poems in the language. But nobody has a perfect life. Every life is enriched by disappointment, driven by compromise, and to suggest that one might have been a good person if only one had not been a great artist is to diminish the integrity of art. It is to suggest that art is not fueled by human experiencefrom the aesthetic to the political to the apocalypticbut somehow transpires beside or beyond it. Ann Saddlemyers recently published edition of the lifelong correspondence between Willy and George allows us to witness the complexities of life and art entwined.

Saddlemyer is a meticulous scholar of a kind now increasingly rare. She has published crucial editions of the plays of Yeatss close friends JM Synge and Augusta Gregory; she has also edited Synges letters. Unlike most meticulous editors, however, Saddlemyer is also an elegant writer with a keen sense of proportion. Her biography of George Yeats, Becoming George: The Life of Mrs. WB Yeats, published in 2002, is uncommonly readable, marked by an acuity of emotional and literary insight lacking in the otherwise distinguished standard biography of Yeats himself (by the historian Roy Foster). Its safe to say that Saddlemyers biography, to which the Yeats family letters are crucial, is more fun to read than the letters themselves.

This is in some ways inevitable. Willy and George were often separated by professional duties, but the distance and the duration were usually short. Their letters consequently tend to skip the leisurely evocations of daily life one associates with a rich correspondence, jumping quickly to the pressing matters of the momentthe sickness of a child (Anne and Michael Yeats were often seriously ill), the restoration of Ballylee (the tower the Yeats family sometimes called home), a question about the Abbey Theatre (of which Yeats was a director), the fate of the Cuala Press (which was haphazardly run by Yeatss sisters, the aptly named Lily and Lolly, who lived together but despised each other).

Yet the letters nonetheless embody something that no biographical narrative can convey: tone. Quoted outside the context of the ongoing correspondence, Georges remark about the oil lamp (you could surely not have imagined that it demanded Sanctuary oil) sounds exasperated, which it is, but the remark is also clever, bemused, loving, generous, meant to entertainpart of an intricately textured exchange between two people who know each other as well or better than they know themselves. So while Willy seems at times the absent patriarch, the dad who loves his work, its also clear that George managed his absences, even condoning the last-gasp amorous liaisons of his final years; she appreciated help with the doddering tiger, as she called him behind his back. When do you want me, wrote a plaintive Willy, hungry for news of home. My only distress is absence from you amp; I miss you always, amp; when I see a lovely sightevening light on the beeches or the lightlong for you that I may talk of it. Is not love being idle together amp; happy in it.

* * *

Still, these letters represent only a small part of the intricate correspondence of Willy and George Yeats. Think back to the autumn of 1917. Stuck in the Ashdown Forest Hotel, her four-day-old marriage a disaster, George began (by her own admission) to fake automatic writing in order to entertain her despondent husband: she then felt her hand seized by an unseen power. Willy described what happened next in the revised edition of A Vision (1937), the esoteric account of all human history and personality that the automatic writing ultimately made possible:

What came in disjointed sentences, in almost illegible writing, was so exciting, sometimes so profound, that I persuaded her to give an hour or two day after day to the unknown writer, and after some half-dozen such hours offered to spend what remained of life explaining and piecing together those scattered sentences, No, was the answer, we have come to give you metaphors for poetry.

Over the next several years, Willy and George produced more than 3,600 pages of script, his questions, her answers. This is their most intimate exchange, and it is almost never referred to in the actual letters Willy and George wrote to each other.

The first few days of automatic writing have not been preserved (the remainder having lately been transcribed and edited by George Mills Harper and a fleet of assistants), so there is no record of Yeats being assured that the spirits had contacted him, through his wife, to further his poetic career. George remembered the initial contact differently: What you have done is right for both the cat and the hare, she scribbled, confident that her husband would understand that the hare was Iseult Gonne and the cat was herself, which he did. In the approximately 450 sessions of automatic writing that followed, the intimate sex life of George and Willy Yeats looms as prominently as metaphors for poetry (though Willy would go on to write great poems about sex). What is important, says one spirit through George, is that both the desire of the medium and her desire for your desire should be satisfied. Willy is advised to keep up his strength by making love to his wife more than once a day: it is like not taking enough exercise amp; a long walk exhausts you. You mean, asked Willy, by doing it once I will lose power of doing it twice. Yes, came the answer, amp; then of doing it once.

The automatic script ranges widely over innumerable topics; it is often tedious; it calls on vast reserves of esoteric knowledge. But one theme is constant: if the conversations are to continue, the medium (or interpreter, as George preferred to be called) must be satisfied. And when the interpreter is not satisfied, the script shouts it out loud and clear:

I dont like you
You neglect me
You dont give me physical symbols
to use

One bite and it’s amour

Love affairs with French cuisine are no secret and these delicate biscuits take the cake for soliciting obsession.

I LOVE French macarons. Its easy enough to buy them, with their myriad flavoured fillings, but making them at home can make even experienced cooks fall flat, like their biscuits. Great macarons are the result of technique, rather than simply following a recipe.

There are many recipes around, and several basic methods, but lack of instruction can stymie the beginner.

The French method creates a creamy texture that can be eaten on the day it is made. However, it is difficult for a beginner to master. The Spanish method is similar, although some of the sugar is added at the end of the mixing process to aid stability.

Gaga by Gaultier

Gaga by Gaultier on film

Jean Paul Gaultier is known for his creative love affairs with strong women and Madonna, Dita von Teese and Beth Ditto have all graced his catwalk with their signature style. This summer will see the designer come face-to-face with power-house of pop music Lady Gaga in a new documentary that already has people talking.

The film, which is due to air 9 June on French television channel TF6, sees the singer and designer enjoy a tte–tte at Gaultiers design house in Paris. The Born This Way star is seen perusing JPGs collection and mood boards, and caressing various designs in his studio. The teaser trailer also shows the eccentric pair take part in a saucy photo-shoot, where a habit-swathed Gaga gets a cheeky spank from the designer who is dressed as a priest.

In the clip, as Gaga leaves the building, Gaultier presents her with a bouquet of flowers to which she replies in perfect French, vous tes gentil! Translation: You are too kind. We cannot wait to see more; we might just have to book a trip to Paris to catch the first airing and perfect our franais, la Gaga.

Watch the trailer below, and keep a look out for Gaultier at Cannes later this week, where his designs will be showcased in Pedro Almodvars The Skin I Live In.

Bollywood Love, Lust or Bust

These people are living in a world where people will do anything for them.

Love, lust or bust the three ideals that continue to roam off the sets of the Bollywood industry have caused much observation from dedicated film lovers. It appears the ethics regarding marital ties just do not exist anymore in the world of fame, with Indian cinema taking the lead displaying possibly more of their dirty laundry than any other film industry. Love affairs and breakups are on a rapid increase in the Indian film industry, the general perception still perceives Bollywood as unsuccessful at maintaining long term relationships.

Bollywood is the biggest film industry in the world and remains untouchable for the quantity of films created per year. The films are known to display an emphasis of culture, endless love stories, action and a spectacular song and dance sequence, although, a subject matter you will struggle to encounter in any Bollywood film is the open portrayal of infidelity and divorce.

With such integrity this huge film industry holds against the encouragement of relationship breakups and divorce, you would surely believe that this trait be carried forward in the personal lives of Bollywood celebrities. Taking a further look at the celebrities in the Indian film industry, we unravel some true facts on the matter, and were astonished with the discovery. What seemed like a culturally led industry was in fact riddled with affairs, scandal and hidden pleasures.

Here are some golden oldie love triangles and affairs that made headlines. Few got converted into marriage, while few met the harsh end of a break-up.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala
Dilip Kumar and Madhubalas relationship is one of the oldest off and on screen love affairs that ended in a sad break-up. The couple first met on the sets of Jwar Bhatta (1944), and it was during the shooting of Tarana (1951) that their chemistry began between them. They courted for a period of five years. Trouble started brewing between the couple during filming of Naya Daur (1957). The story goes that Madhubala’s father, objected to the outdoor shoot claiming that it was an opportunity for the lovers to spend more time together.

B.R Chopra the director of the film registered a case against Madhubala, due to the actress’s refusal to continue work, and Dilip Kumar testified against both Madhubala and her father. Tarnishing and ending their affair. However, another strand of the story is that after the case, when Dilip Kumar proposed marriage, Madhubala refused because he was unwilling to apologise to her father for testifying against them. Madhubala eventually married Kishore Kumar. Despite their break-up one of the biggest hit films for the couple was Mughal-E-Azam in 1960.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis
The legendary original showman of Bollywood Raj Kapoor entertained us with some timeless classics, captivated the love interest of superstar Nargis whilst onset on one of the hits they shared together. Their chemistry was matchless and their onscreen presence was captive. Rumours of their affection for each other soon became exploited, Raj was already married and a father. Later both parted with Nargis getting married to Sunil Dutt, whom she described as her real love. It was Sunil Dutt who did something no other man had done for her he saved her life during a fire on the set of Mother India. This was the point when Nargis fell in love with Sunil Dutt.

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman
Guru Dutt, one of the best directors Bollywood has ever had, fell in love with one of the finest actresses of all time Waheeda Rehman. The year was 1956, when Guru Dutt introduced the new girl, Waheeda Rehman in his movie CID. and subsequently rumors of his affair with his new leading lady started surfacing.

Dutt like Raj Kapoor was already married to Geeta Dutt who was an established playback singer, before encountering his love affair with Rehman. Their marriage of nearly 5 years ran into trouble due to the affair, and divorce became ineluctable. Guru Dutt later committed suicide at the early age of 40.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini
Dharam Singh Deol better known as Dharmendra, is a huge iconic figure in the Hindi film industry back in the 1970′s, with his super model looks, his smash hit movies and of course the trademark family name ‘Deol’. This legendary actor was a super hero to his fans, nothing could come in the way of his powers unless of course you were of the opposite sex and very attractive.

Even though Dharmendra was a married man he could never hold back from the beautiful women in his career wooing them to finally endure an off screen relationship, but one beauty in particular went on to become his second wife mega star actress Hema Malini. Dharmendra and Hema Malini fell in love on the set of Sholay (1975). He wed Hema whilst still married to first wife Prakash Kaur with whom he had Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha
A well known on-screen couple from the 1970s was Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. They made a total of nine films together. Rumors of their affair hit B-town after their first few films together. Stories include the Big B staying at Rekhas mansion in Bandra and not going back home some nights. While Rekha has often given her true feelings away in the course of television and print interviews in the 20-odd years since the relationship, Amitabh, as always, has maintained complete silence, neither confirming nor contradicting the allegations.

At the height of their affair, Yash Raj managed to pull off a casting coup by securing Amitabh, Rekha and Jaya for the love triangle movie Silsila. Which many feel was a reflection of reality between the three. This was Rekhas last film with Amitabh and she went on to live a life alone.

Assessing a break up from the world of fame compares variably from the everyday person. A psychologist Aric Sigman analysed the subject saying:

The celebrity marriage is a professional amalgamation of two children. Celebrities need to be applauded and a spouse often doesnt do that.”

Age, religion and occasionally status are not a concern in the Indian film industry to build a relationship but still Bollywood encounters many break ups. The list of current stars shacking up with each other is endless and here, we name a few:

Salman Khan and Aishwariya Rai
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and beauty symbol Aishwarya Rais relationship was a hot break up. Salman began to date Aishwarya after acting with her in 1999′s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. After ample amount of controversies, Salman and Ash broke up. “The most beautiful woman in the world” Aishwarya claimed that Salman was harassing her after their break up because he did not take it well. She certainly seems to be quite the heart-breaker, also reportedly breaking up with actor Vivek Oberoi afterwards. And finally settling with Abhishek Bachchan, who many think was a clever move on her part, becoming the Bachchan bahu.

Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty
The Punjabi stallion and Casanova of romance Akshay Kumar in his prime went on to find comfort in the hands of Shilpa Shetty, and this too happened soon after a much speculated affair with 1990′s heroine Raveena Tandon.

Like most Bollywood affairs this one was far from lasting with Akshay settling down and marrying actress Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia.

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor
Shahid and Kareena were one of the industry’s most talked about couples, and ended up being Bollywoods most iconic modern day break up. The couple had been seeing each other for over three years, when they finally went their separate ways, Kareena delving straight into the arms of Saif Ali Khan; who himself dumped his ex-star older wife Amrita Singh for Rosa Cateleno.

Shahid has been linked with a few new Bollywood females, including Priyanka Chopra.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
This Bollywood couple were one of the new generation of stars seen in love all over the tabloids. Ranbir the son of veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh was courting Deepika openly and they were seen as the youngest Bollywood hook up, admired by teenagers. However, things became sour between them and Ranbir decided to end his love affair with Deepika.

Many blamed the Kapoor family not being happy with Deepika as Ranbirs choice of woman, whilst others blamed Ranbir for being a hypocrite and a cheat. But interestingly, Deepika still kept her tattoo of Ranbir despite their bust-up.

Whatever the length of a celebrity relationship, doesn’t it seem like most celebrity relationships are doomed? Just where does it seem to be going all so wrong for these celebs? Break ups and divorce have always been a foundation of showbiz life, what seems to be particularly interesting are the high number of affairs and break ups in Indian cinema. This industry usually keeps romantic affairs and infidelity narrative amongst their films to a minimum. Because it simply is not something that happens very openly in Indian society. But why does it happen in high numbers off the sets in Bollywood?

Actors live an uncomparable lifestyle where everyone wants to be them. They are surrounded by the most beautiful people on screen almost making it impossible for infidelity not to occur. Their lifestyle can become extremely overwhelming that the glamour and unreality of being on set is just too seductive for some actors to resist. As quoted by a film casting director: An actor is away from domesticity and playing a different character and it just becomes easier to commit an infidelity. These people are living in a world where people will do anything for them.

Some Bollywood stars invent break ups and related storylines in their personal lives to help boost their public ratings and awareness. In the past film stars did not flaunt their affairs in public. But now, faced with flops and a sense of insecurity failure brings, they make sure that their exploits are made into sizzling cover stories.

The people in the Bollywood industry are so ideolised by the public that they start living reel life in real life too. But, after a while the fantasy starts dying and when reality descends, it is hard to accept encompassing a break up. And as far as actors are concerned, their work pressure is so high and lifestyle so crazy, that somehow they lose a balance in a relationship, not able to spend as much time with their loved ones ultimately resulting in a break-up too.

However, while you don’t want to be watching your friends or peers marriages crumble into divorce or relationships end, it is amazing how fascinated we all are when it comes to watching celebrity relationships slowly or rapidly deteriorate. In many cases, we look up to celebrities as a contemporary form of royalty, afterall celebs are more attractive than us and much richer than most of us could ever imagine. Overall a celebrity is an entertainer, it is their job to amuse us endlessly, the public love drama and the Bollywood celebrity sure does provide that satisfaction with their break-up sagas!

To the editor:

All love affairs have challenges. Fortunately, most are good.
Our love of cars is a good example. Modern cars are dependable,
comfortable and part of a good life. Most owners care for and
protect their cars. They seem to become a part of us associated
with favorite times and places. A big appeal is the action they
provide. Almost every day we join multitudes mixing around town and
beyond.

The Strange Love Affairs of a Penguin and a Swan

Whose thoughts dont turn to love in springtime? The sunny weather is enough to warm the hardest of hearts. The blooming flowers and budding trees dont hurt either. And then there are the outdoor cafes, the rubber boots and the tractors.

Rubber boots and tractors?

In Germany — at least among the feathered populace — it would seem that nascent love affairs with inanimate objects are all the rage this year. Schwani, a swan in the village of Velen in western Germany, has decided that a blue tractor is the love of his life. And in Sea Life Constance, in Germanys far south, a penguin named Bonaparte has fallen hard for a rubber boot.

In the case of Schwani, at least, it would appear to be a long-term thing. Hermann-Josef Hericks, who runs the farm where the swan lives, told the tabloid Bild that Schwani has been beak-over-heels for a blue, 39 horsepower tractor for several years. Ever since we bought the tractor three years ago, Schwani has been following it everywhere it goes, Hericks told the paper.

Tractor as a Sexual Partner

In its always-sincere effort to get to the bottom of the story, Bild phoned up animal behaviorist Daniela Fiutak to ask why Schwani would do such a thing. The swan presumably had contact with machines during puberty, she said. He sees the tractor as a sexual partner.

Bonapartes infatuation, on the other hand, is of more recent origin. Recently, the gentoo penguin has taken to following his trainer around the enclosure — in the vain hope of getting a little time alone with one of the trainers rubber boots.

The boots, black with a white sole, look like a female penguin lying on the ground, according to one possible explanation for Bonapartes behavior. I have never seen such a thing before, Bonapartes keeper, Dennis Kübler, told a local paper.

That may be true. But last year also saw Sea Life having breeding troubles in their penguin enclosure. A pair of birds that seemed deeply in love — and even built themselves a nest together — ultimately proved unable to have babies. They were, as it turned out, both males.

Schwanis confusion is likewise not as unique as one might think. Five years ago, a black swan named Petra made headlines in Germany for her love affair with a plastic pedal boat. To Petras credit, though, the boat was shaped like a swan.
